The Drone Technology & Fabrication Summer Camp is being offered by KITE (Karachi Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship) in collaboration with INTEGRATED DYNAMICS’ – a Pakistani company with experience in developing civilian and military unmanned systems – through the KITE-DARE (Design. Assemble. Research. Explore) education initiative. Through this hands-on, rigorous program we aim to educate and train young minds about Drone/UAV technology and its applications.

  • Drone Building - Unmanned Technology and Its Applications:

    Drones are an exciting new area of technology. Also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles - UAV’s - their use is generally misunderstood. This course, spread over 4 weeks, creates awareness about the real story behind drones, the technology and systems that make them work and how there are hundreds of unexplored civilian and life-saving applications that could have practical use.

    UAVs or Drones have become a buzzword in recent times. This course is designed to take students through a natural path of awareness, function and practical application. An actual civilian application drone is built and assembled which allows:

    • Developing an understanding of essential subsystems
    • Learning about materials and integration of electronics, sensors, cameras and mechanical systems
    • Understanding how drones can be used in civilian life-saving applications and disaster zones
    • Helping students define their own applications < > and missions after understanding the technology and its benefits and barriers.
    • Learning how to make checklists and data sheets while working with advanced systems
    • Learning how to interface different elements to perform as a complete system
    • Understanding safety and operational parameters

    KITE (Karachi Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship) is a young, dynamic, degree granting institution of higher learning. KITE’s mission is to craft and cultivate entrepreneurs and change agents using its unique interdisciplinary undergraduate programs.

    Program Curriculum:

    MODULE 1:
    • What is a drone?
    • Types of drones: civilian, military, research.
    • Essential system elements
    • Applications and uses

    MODULE 2:
    • Building a DIY (Do It Yourself) drone for medical deliveries, search & rescue
    • Defining – and refining - the mission
    • Picking the parts to do the job
    • The airframe
    • The motor
    • The avionics
    • Data links and ground stations
    • Launch & Recovery systems

    MODULE 3:
    • Building the Search & Rescue drone
    • Integrating the sub-systems
    • Testing and calibrating the systems
    • Establishing mission objectives
    • Simulating and testing the mission

    MODULE 4:
    • Pre-flight check lists
    • Safety & precautions
    • Test flying the drone
    • Checking and analyzing results
    • Other civilian apps

    Learning Outcomes:

    MODULE 1:
    • Understand the difference between various types of drones
    • Understand core technology
    • Understand subsystem elements
    • Define applications and uses

    MODULE 2:
    • Understanding how a drone can be designed for an application
    • Understanding design methods and taking ideas and concepts into prototypes
    • Defining core system elements to perform a specific mission
    • Learning how to launch and recover the drone

    MODULE 3:
    • Learning how to build a simple drone
    • Understanding materials and tools used
    • Understanding how basic systems are interfaced
    • Integrating electronics with mechanical and electrical devices
    • Understanding interference between systems and precautions needed
    • Understanding how a mission is developed
    • Simulating the mission

    MODULE 4:
    • Learning how to make and use checklists
    • Understanding testing and calibration in the lab
    • Understanding flight safety
    • Flying the mission
    • Analyzing results
    • Exploring other applications

    Students will also be given homework tasks and asked to write out research reports on the content that they have absorbed through weekly modules.
